Why are UFC tickets such a hot item these days? From its humble beginnings decades ago as a straightforward contest between the various martial arts to determine which was the most effective, it has grown into multi-million dollar entertainment behemoth that is the UFC.

The Asian martial arts have become incredibly popular in the United States. Within a five mile radius you will probably find at least three or four Tae Kwon Do schools, a few karate schools, a Chinese kung fu school and a handful of Judo, Aikido, Jiu Jitsu schools, as well. A martial arts student can pick and choose which style appeals to them and is free to combine elements from multiple styles.

The martial arts have integrated into western consumer culture quite well. The ability to pick and choose has encouraged the blending of styles which had been separated for hundreds of years. This is resulting in the emergence of a uniquely American fighting style.

The first wave of the martial arts boom in the United States occurred in the years directly following World War II. American servicemen stationed in the east discovered the strange, effective fighting arts of Japan while based in the region as part of the post war occupational force.

The primary martial art that was introduced at this time was Judo, which was popular in mainland Japan, along with an Okinawan martial art collectively known by their Japanese name – the words "kara" meaning "empty" and "te" meaning "hand" which combined to form the common word "karate" or "empty hand." The second wave focused on Chinese forms of the martial arts (kung fu), largely popularized by the demonstrations and movie and TV roles of Bruce Lee in the 1960’s.

Today, mixed martial arts (MMA), which combines striking arts with wrestling and grappling has become an accepted martial arts in its own right. This has been particularly highlighted by the success of the Ultimate Fighting circuit, which is as close to no holds barred fighting as you’ll find in modern sports.

The early Ultimate Fighting Championships featured fighters skilled in one primary area. They might be a boxer, a grappler or a karate practitioner but rarely did you see a true mixed martial artist. However, these specialists soon found themselves outclassed by the more versatile MMA fighters. This was most stunningly highlighted recently when Royce Gracie, who was the winner of three of the first four Ultimate Fighting Championships, was soundly defeated by Matt Hughes.

Does this mean that traditional martial arts have been supplanted by the new breed of MMA styles? Absolutely not. but as any true martial arts practitioner knows, the true value of studying the martial arts comes not in finding ways to beat your opponent but rather in the challenge of facing down your own fears and failings tobecome the best you can be.

UFC Fights can be very unpredictable. Your front row ticket lets you experience the main event up close and personal, but the fight can be over in 30 seconds or 30 minutes.  This encounter between Royce Gracie and Matt Hughes is a good example.

Matt Hughes had been training for nearly a decade for a UFC fight with Royce Gracie without even realizing it. When Royce Gracie unleashed Gracie Jiu Jitsu on the MMA world in UFC 1, no one knew what it was or how it worked. By UFC 2 people began to see that there was a pattern to what he was doing.

Fighters attempted to dissect Gracie Jiu Jitsu, but in reality they were analyzing Royce Gracie’s application of the fighting style. Without setting out to do so, every fighter that wanted to evolve and step up his game by learning to employ and defend Gracie Jiu Jitsu was training to fight Royce. It became Royce Gracie vs. the MMA world.

To Royce’s credit, he remained largely victorious in all of his bouts for years to come. But a man with a bulls eye on his back is bound to get hit once in a while.  was an on target bullet at UFC 60 where he bested the king and pulled out the most significant victory of his career. But was it fair?

Matt Hughes is a tremendous athlete with dedication to his craft and an abundance of skill. Add to that palette an army of trainers teaching students how to defend and counter Royce Gracie’s every move, and Matt Hughe’s victory becomes somewhat destiny.

In theory, another Gracie would have had a much better shot at beating Matt Hughes. Take a look at Renzo Gracie’s incredible performance against BJ Penn, who has been touted as pound for pound the best fighter on the planet by many. Renzo fought tough and nearly pulled out a victory. His different style than Royce’s may have been enough for him to gain victory over Hughes.

Royce is possibly the greatest ever, but even a bullet can be dodged when its target has advanced warning. A strategy for Royce, which under normal circumstances would seem absurd, would be to do the opposite of what some of the Gracie Jiu Jitsu tactics are. When he should place his body weight a certain way, if he were to suddenly shift the opposite way his opponent would be totally thrown off momentarily. And a moment is all a boa constrictor like Royce needs.

UFC fighting has become a popular combat and contact sport worldwide. Fighters employ various fighting styles including kicks, punches and wrestling moves. The beginnings of the sport can be traced back to the Grecian Olympic Games circa 600 BC, where the mixed fighting style known as pankration was a popular event.

The modern version of these Mixed Martial Arts competitions dates back to the 1920s. It was then that the Brazilian Gracie family started what they called "vale tudo" (literally, "anything goes") martial arts tournaments. By the late 1960s, mixed martial arts matches were being hosted in Japan by Antonio Inoki, and later, Bruce Lee’s "hybrid fighting" injected a new dynamic into the fighting sports.

MMA gained a foothold in the United States in 1993, when Brazilian ju-jitsu fighter Royce Gracie dominated the Ultimate Fighting Championship and touched off a revolution in the martial arts world. Television coverage began sporadically and then began to pick up momentum in the mid-1990s with regular cable coverage and tie-ins to live events.

Continued interest in the new, growing sport resulted in the establishment of the PRIDE Fighting Championships in Japan in the late 1990s. At this point, and into the early 2000s, MMA tournaments began implementing extra rules for fighters’ safety, as well as to engender acceptance of the sport. Since instituting these changes, MMA has quickly grown to the point of setting cable-TV pay-per-view records for its matches.

Proponents of the sport want to keep as much of the initial no-holds-barred style as possible, while at the same time making the sport popular and protecting the health and safety of competitors. The sport is internationally popular, still growing and building a global fan base that can support professional league, as well as lobby for inclusion in the modern Olympics.

That is the next big fight coming up for MMA, so if you’re a martial arts fan (or athlete), stay tuned for the news about new medal sports at the 2012 olympic games in London. A serious campaign was waged to get the sport into the 2008 Beijing games, but was ultimately unsuccessful. Interestingly, this has not stopped the sport’s growth, but merely turned the predictions on their heads.

Instead of the sport joining the Olympic line-up, Olympic stars are joining MMA. Olympic athlete Satoshi Ishii is giving up judo to take up a career in mixed martial arts following his gold medal win in the men’s over-100-kilogram event at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. He is the third Japanese judo medalist to make the move since 2000.

Other single-discipline martial arts masters are making the move to the multidisciplinary MMA style. Several national and international organizations promote matches and crown champions, and the coming years should see further consolidation of the different groups, perhaps into a single governing body.

Growth, media coverage, pay-per-view, publicity, promotions and controversy – these are all signposts along the route that most "newer" sports take to widespread acceptance and eventual popularity, and it all seems to be happening now for MMA. With the number of stars and fans increasing steadily, MMA certainly does seem ready to become the breakthrough sport of the new millennium.

The world of Ultimate Fighting Championships has recently entered the mainstream. It is now known as the largest Mixed Martial Arts organization in the world and commands a huge pay per view following. UFC fighters use an array of skills ranging from boxing, karate, and wrestling to combat each other in a steel cage.

There is nothing fake about the UFC (unlike professional wrestling), and it’s more brutal than boxing. There are some similarities between UFC and boxing such as weight classes that categorize each fighter, and the fact that each weight class has its own champion.

Like boxing, UFC fighters must undergo a very rigorous training regimen to ensure that they are fully prepared for their fight. They must study the skills of their opponent, and learn their strengths and weaknesses. Entering a UFC ring when not prepared can lead to an early take down or knock out.

A popular show called "The Ultimate Fighter" was created to give an idea of the dedication it takes to become a true UFC fighter. The show began to air on Spike TV in January, 2005. The popularity of the UFC fights also have made available the UFC on demand online streaming where you can watch your favorite fights directly on your computer.

With UFC catapulting in popularity, tickets for the fights have now become a hot commodity. Each UFC fight has many celebrities in attendance, and the fights are always covered live on pay per view. Even though the fighting in UFC is real, it should be noted that there are a few rules that govern the sport. Three of them are no biting, no kicking or punching to the back of the head, and no eye scraping.

The only way to win a fight is by knockout or submission. The UFC aims to display the best well rounded fighters in the world, and becausse of this it continues to grow yearly both in attendance and pay per view buys.

Some of the more popular past champions of UFC are Ken Shamrock, Tito Ortiz, and Chuck Liddell to name a few. With a new UFC fight night being featured regularly, you can sit back and watch as the best fighters in the world compete in the steel octagon cage.

More UFC tickets have been sold because of Chuck Liddell. Ever since his reign as the UFC Light Heavyweight Champion, Chuck Liddell has been the UFC’s greatest commodity. A terrific puncher with an outstanding ability to defend the takedown. Chuck is second to none even though he is one of the oldest UFC fighters. Chuck is known as the "Iceman" because of what he does best – Knock outs.

Recently however, Chuck Liddell has been on the knockout receiving end ot things in in three consecutive fights. First with a devastating right hand from Quinton "Rampage" Jackson followed by an overhand right from Heavy Weight "Sugar" Rashad Evans – a picture that surely left impressions in everyone’s head and will probably be remembered as one of the most vicious knockouts in UFC history. Then there was his most recent loss to Light Heavy Weight contender Mauricio "Shogun" Rua via a vicious left hook.

It looked like that would be Chuck’s last UFC fight. However, further investigation revealed that Liddell does indeed have one fight left on his UFC contract. Dana White, UFC President, though Chuck should retire for his own well-being. So, what do you think? Should Chuck Liddell retire?

The answer is not as clear cut as you may think. Many fellow fighters, including Randy "The Natural" Couture have been adamant about Liddell being able to retire on his own terms. Even Anderson "The Spider" Silva has remarked that Liddell should be able to decide. However, others like Rashad Evans have been vocal about the Iceman retiring stating that age has a detrimental effect on an individuals ability to fight. Regardless of their thoughts, everyone seems to agree that they don’t want to see Chuck get hurt, no one more so than long time friend Dana White. But with the recent feud between Dana and his other long time friend John Hackleman, there seems to be speculation that Liddell may not roll over that easy.

There is also no question that Liddell came out against Rua in the best shape of his life, but is that enough anymore? Will Dana let him go and potentially let him be signed by rival company Affliction? Only time will tell; however, the decision is ultimately no ones except the Iceman’s.

MMA is considered a sport and it is derived from a variety of martial arts and fighting techniques. It is a full contact combat sport that is seen by many as rather brutal. Both traditional martial arts techniques and non-traditional ones are used in competitions that are held around the world.

Everyday people are taking up the sport of mixed martial arts. Learning mixed martial arts helps people focus their mental energy and channel it in order to defend themselves. Intense practice is needed to master any mixed martial art. However, in order to properly learn it, a person must get the proper MMA equipment for the particular style they chose to learn. This essentially begins with the proper clothing.

There is different MMA equipment that fighters use help prevent injuries and promote their safety. The categories range from gloves to mouth guards and helmets. When it comes to choosing MMA gloves, they are available in open palm and closed palm styles. The gloves are very popular because they do not interfere with flexibility or grip. The focus mitt is also a very important piece of MMA equipment. The mitts are comfortably curved to fit properly, which also prevents hand cramps.

Most MMA fighters will agree that the most critical piece of MMA equipment that must be worn is the mouth guard. A mouth guard not only protects your teeth and mouth, but wearing a mouth guard properly will also prevent you from suffering a concussion with a blow to the teeth.

Of course, protection during stand up training and fighting is a must. The MMA equipment needed are helmets that are made from thick, rubbery material. These types of helmets are heavier and more durable and the protection they provide is stellar.

Remember, different forms of mixed martial arts require different kinds of MMA equipment. However, the focus should always be on the free movement of the person who is wearing the equipment. Clothing and MMA equipment designed for mixed martial arts is made to provide protection to vital organs as well as complete mobility to the wearer. This makes finding the proper MMA equipment vital to being able to learn any type of mixed marital art properly.

Once you have the basic MMA equipment purchased you can rest easy knowing you will be properly protected when you begin your training. Your friends and family may feel better too, knowing you will be protected!

UFC fights require many dedicated hours of training and exercise. Being an effective UFC or MMA fighter is all about getting your body into top physical condition. This requires hours of exercise and workouts to properly develop the muscles necessary to deliver effective blows but also to protect the body from the punishment it will receive.

MMA referred to as mixed martial arts has quickly become one of the more popular fighting sports for men and women. Training for MMA fights is a long and painful process. You must utilise several contrasting types of techniques to get the better of your opponent.

It is important to know that there are many unique methods to training for mixed martial arts – but this regime is one of the most rewarding that you can utilize. The following training practice will assist you in working out every portion of your body.

Weight Training

To get the force you require from this unique workout lift weights that are low in reps. Execute high and fast reps with the weights. For example utilize 20 pound weights and do as many reps as you can within 40 seconds.

Running

Running is an effective way to increase cardio – but it should not be your complete focus. It is advisable to make a few long runs two times during the week. You can also do short walks. For a heavier workout you can utilise rubber bands while you sprint.

Olympic Lifts

During MMA competitions you will be running around the ring the entire time. In order to punch your fighter or to take your them to the ground you will have to be quick. When doing Olympic lifting make sure not to utilise weights that are fabulously heavy. Also make sure that a professional instructs you the proper way of doing this exercise. Executing these in the wrong way can create an injury.

Circuits

This type of exercise aids to merge cardio work outs with body weight physical exercises. Ensure that the circuit rounds are more than or close to the duration of each round you are fighting in.

Sparring

It won’t do any good to fight in an MMA competition if you do not know how to execute the unique techniques and are ineffectual to take any punches. The best way to increase your strength is to find a partner that will spar with you and that knows how to fight MMA style. During these sparring exercises you need to wear the correct MMA training gloves and mouthpiece to protect yourself from injuries.

How did UFC tickets become such a hot item? Sold out events are now the norm. A far cry from its humble beginnings. In just a few years, it has risen from a despised sport under attack from state officials to a billion dollar sports and clothing juggarnaut.

Its clear to see where boxing leaves off and Mixed Martial Arts begins. Just one look at the UFC octagon steel cage and the frantic crowds and you instantly know that MMA is a world apart from the boxing your grandfather loved. This is the world where different combat styles pit themselves against the rest to determine which one reigns supreme. Its a brutal contest where the will to fight has always been more important than the desire to bring home a dollar. The fighters that put themselves into the octagon have a fierce pride that has long been missing from the world of professional boxing.

In 2001 under new ownership and with Dana White as their outspoken and fight ready leader it made a quick and triumphant return to the main stage with stricter fight rules, pay per views, electric competitions and a show called Ultimate Fighter. This all proved to be a lethal combination that led the UFC and Mixed Martial Arts back to the limelight that it briefly shared with professional boxing.

With the explosion of the Ultimate Fighter the UFC was able to reach a new audience that has boosted sales of pay per views,  MMA Fighter Gear, apparel and ticket sales. The show has helped to breed some of the most entertaining and efficient fighters in Mixed Martial Arts history. With fans running rabid to get a hold of merchandise sold by Tap Out: a company built on the back of Mixed Martial Arts, the UFC has been able to build long lasting business relationships that has helped them with putting their stamp on the world of fighting. It is no wonder that pay per view sales have surpassed that of professional boxing. They also hold their own against the pay per view sales of long established professional wrestling, most notably, World Wrestling Entertainment.

With a firm foothold in the 18-35 demographic there is no indication that the UFC and Mixed Martial Arts will fizzle out like it did in its previous incarnation. As the fighters are strong and ready to fight at a moments notice, the leadership behind the sport is equally as hungry to remain on top of the world of fighting.

K. Green lives with her husband who is a huge fan of mixed martial arts and she has a great deal of experience in buying all kinds of MMA Fighter Gear on a regular basis.

Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) makes use of several fighting techniques and a minimum set of rules to create an organized but hands-on contact sport. In the past, mixed martial arts has been criticized as being nothing more than free-for-all fighting, but with rules and guidelines in place, MMA has been able to shake off most of the negativity that seems to surround it.

Mixed martial arts is a structured setting in which two people have at it without endangering each other. Though it used to be considered as little more than street fighting, MMA is quickly  becoming a very popular sport in the United States and around the world.

MMA has a long history, dating back to the Olympic Games of Greece. Its purpose then was to provide a combat sport for the amusement and training of the Greek soldiers. Rules for the fight were minimal and a fight ended only when one or both solders became incapacitated.

Today’s MMA is much more structured, but still allows for participants to work out their aggression and tension, which is probably why it is so popular. Rules prohibit eye gouging, biting, hair pulling, and other other underhanded techniques making it less dangerous and more attractive to the amateur fighter.  Protective clothing and protective gear are important also.

MMA is comprised of several fighting techniques which encourages lively and unique fighting styles and competitions. This is a major draw for the sport. Some common MMA techniques include boxing and kickboxing, judo, freestyle wrestling, Sambo, Muay Thai, Kyokushin karate and Brazilian jiu-jitsu.

Mixed Martial Arts is often criticized as being nothing more than brawling and a way of encouraging violence, but those who take part in the sport understand there it is a lot more to it than "just a fight".

MMA cage fighting is held in an eight sided cage that is reinforced with chain link material and padded heavily. This structure is called the Octagon. The sport has seen tremendous growth in popularity over the last several years, and although the basic premise has remained the same, the rules, regulations, and conditions that govern what types of fight gear and apparel a fighter can wear during a match in the cage.

The Octagon has become associated as a symbol that relates to the UFC (Ultimate Fighting Championship) and the MMA as well. Fans can see MMA cage fighting regularly on TV, and it is featured in the national media fairly often. The UFC is now known as the largest and most recognized MMA (Mixed Martial Arts) promotion worldwide. The company Zuffa, LLC owns the UFC and has its headquarters in Las Vegas, Nevada.

The UFC began in the 1970s in Brazil and was based on the Brazilian fighting style that is known as tudo style. When it first began, however, it really was a no rules, no holds barred contest that absorbed a lot of protests from all over the world as being incredibly violent and inhumane. The criticism worked, as far as the protesters were concerned. The UFCs popularity diminished significantly, and at its lowest point, it reorganized and reformed, adopting strict rules that were sanctioned by athletic commissions, and was re-marketed as a legitimate, safer, and more humane sporting event.

The attire that fighters wear for these kinds of competitions is regulated heavily as well. Only regulation gloves and regulation shorts are allowed. Shirts and shoes are not allowed no matter what type they are. Special gloves help the fighters deliver stronger punches and also protect fighters from injury at the same time.

Back when MMA cage fighting began in the 1970s, the attire was worn without regard to any rules, and the many fighters seemed to prefer either tight athletic shorts, boxer shorts, or tight wrestling suits and long pants. One of the most popular fighters of all time, tournament champion Royce Gracie would wear a jujitsu gi in his UFC appearances. During their re-organization phase in the early 1990s, the UFC and MMA decided to regulate MMA cage fighting attire. Since then, such clothing and apparel has become very popular with fans of mixed martial arts as well.
