The last time we saw Randy Couture fight in the light heavyweight division, as he will when he takes on Brandon Vera at UFC 105, we thought that it might be the last time we saw him fight period. After being knocked out by Chuck Liddell for the second time, it appeared that he just didn’t have what it took anymore to compete at a championship level. Furthering this notion, sandwiched inbetween the two Liddell losses was a win over Mike Van Arsdale, where, to be frank, Couture looked a bit slow on his feet. Of course, soon after that he came out of retirement to defeat heavyweights Tim Sylvia and Gabriel Gonzaga, reaffirming his already legendary status.

But now, Couture has dropped consecutive heavyweight contests to Brock Lesnar and Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira, looking good despite the defeats. Interestingly, the last time he lost two straight as a heavyweight, Couture also chose to drop down to the 205 pound weight class. And everyone knows what they say about age- it takes speed first and power second.

So let’s cut to the chase. Has age taken the hand speed he needs to successfully take on a guy like Brandon Vera at UFC 105? It’s often assumed that a fighter will automatically look better when they drop down in weight, but that isn’t always the case. Sure Couture is the better wrestler and will likely be able to get Vera to the canvas. But they start each round on their feet. So if speed is an issue, if age has begun to take that away, it could prove to be more of a problem for Couture as a light heavyweight- where the fighters are faster- than at heavyweight.

Then again, this is Randy Couture we’re talking about, a man that defies age. So we’ll see.

Every time you go in there, you always want to try and make the fans happy, and it s a little depressing when they don’t cheer for you, when they boo you. I didn’t really feel too much on the rib cage, but the legs, I started to feel it on the inside of one of my legs, and it was bothering me.

I was a hundred percent, but sometimes when you get in there, you re strategy doesn’t always work exactly like you planned it to. I would have liked to perform better, but it happens sometimes. I was looking to finish the fight whenever I could, but it showed that Shogun came very well prepared for this fight.

I was constantly trying to find openings to finish the fight, but unfortunately, I didn’t get that. It s just going to motivate me to train harder and I can guarantee you I m going to put a better performance next time.

Reigning light heavyweight champion Lyoto Machida talks about his controversial unanimous decision win over challenger Mauricio Rua at UFC 104 last Saturday night in Los Angeles. Shogun appeared to be getting the better of the exchanges in their five round title fight and all but three people in attendance were prepared to crown Rua the new 205-pound champ. Unfortunately those three people were cageside judges Nelson Hamilton, Marcos Rosales and Cecil Peoples.

Ever wonder how many people were compelled to become involved in martial arts after seeing Bruce Lee perform on the screen? Too many to count, right? That said, if you are counting, add Dan Miller, a recent inductee to the Universal Martial Arts Association’s Hall of Fame, to the list.

And like Bruce Lee, Dan Miller wants to make a splash on the big screen. "That was my first goal as a child after seeing Bruce Lee movies," Miller told The State Journal. "I never gave up on it. It always stayed with me. I tried to leave but I came back to it. It’s like it called me."

At 36, you have to give him credit for following his dream no matter where it takes him. Congratulations on a great honor.

Recently, when the UFC wants to bring in a fighter with some fan appeal – Mirko Cro Cop, anyone? – Mostapha Al Turk tends to be the guy standing in the way. Well, according to Rolles Gracie and his management team the newest Gracie to grace the Octagon will be fighting at UFC 109 against… guess who? That’s right, Al Turk.

Rolles is the son of Rolls, whose uncle was Helio Gracie. He holds a second degree black belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and a 3-0 mixed martial arts record, with all of his wins coming by way of submission. The bottom line is that anytime a Gracie enters the UFC Octagon, particularly one that people are as high on as Rolles, it’s a pretty exciting time. It will be interesting to see what he can do with the organization.

Nate Diaz and Gray Maynard are set to fight in the main event at Ultimate Fight Night 20 on January 11th graciefighter.com has announced. It will not be the first time the two lightweights will have fought each other however, as they previously squared off in the cage in the semi-finals of The Ultimate Fighter Season 5. On that occasion Diaz came out on top, locking on a guillotine choke in the second round. Diaz would then go on to win the show outright.

Since then both fighters have made a significant impression on the UFC s lightweight division. Gray Maynard (8-0-1NC) is currently on a six fight unbeaten run, defeating Frankie Edgar, Jim Miller and Roger Huerta along the way, and has been suggested as a possible title contender if his current form continues.

Meanwhile Nate Diaz (11-4) started off strongly in the UFC after beating Manny Gamburian in the TUF finale, registering a further four wins before losing two decisions in a row to Clay Guida and Joe Stevenson. He bounced back in his last fight however, claiming a second round submission victory over Melvin Guillard.

For Maynard the fight sees both the opportunity for revenge, and the chance to claim another significant win that will boost his title hopes. For Diaz a win over Maynard at this stage would be more notable than his previous win over the wrestler considering his current run of form, and would signify that he is again ready to push for a top contender spot himself.

Chuck Liddell is proving himself to be a man of many talents. Now that he has put his dancing career to rest, looks like he is taking another look at competing in the Octagon. Since his recent unexpected defeat by Rampage Jackson, Chuck has needed to step back and contemplate his place in the UFC going forward. Props: Sherdog.com

I still love fighting. I don t know what we re going to come up with. I m going to start spending a lot of time training guys or get back in there – one of the two. I needed some time off. Dancing actually gave me something to concentrate on and get in shape on. I just want to get back in shape and stay in shape and start training with people and see what I want to do. [And] why would anyone even want to see me fight Kimbo? I have no interest in that fight. Whatever. It is what it is. I guess I d do it, if that s who I had to fight to come back.

Former light heavyweight champion Chuck Liddell mulls a potential return to the cage that made him famous after getting booted from Dancing with the Stars on ABC. The Iceman is coming off a technical knockout loss to Mauricio Shogun Rua at UFC 97 back in April, marking his fourth loss in his last five fights.

Company president Dana White has pressed his good friend and big time money-making machine to hang up the gloves, saying he has made a ton of cash and has nothing left to prove. Liddell who will be 40 years old by the time April 2010 rolls around clearly needs more time make up his mind but would apparently do whatever it takes to get back inside the cage. Even if that means fulfilling a rumor gone wild about hooking them up with the grappling deprived Kevin Kimbo Slice Ferguson. Syndicated by MMAmania

Rampage Jackson has had it with the UFC… Being taken for granted and feeling disrespected, Rampage has declared that his fighting days with the UFC are over. Time will tell, of course. A great talent. Hopefully, they can convince him to reconsider his decision.

Rampage says "Im done fighting"! I’m done fighting… The UFC has done a lot for me but I think I have done more for them. The UFC bought WFA to get my contract and they saved my life, so I felt loyal to them.

They pushed me into a fight with Chuck Liddel even when I clearly stated I wasn’t ready to fight for the belt because the American fans didn’t know me but I took the fight and didn’t complain and after I won the American fans booed me for the first time which changed the way I saw them & it hurt me deeply.

Then before I can even get out of the cage they announced that I was fighting Dan Henderson without even asking me. After I beat Dan Henderson, I made history in becoming the first undisputed champion in MMA but was never even given the pride belt in the cage and I was never promoted as the undisputed champ. Later Anderson Silva was. Submitted by scrapp-happy

With the 10th season of The Ultimate Fighter now in full swing here’s a quick look at 10 things we ve learned from this season so far:

1. Kimbo Slice Is Still A Ratings Winner

The first episode drew 4.1 million viewers, a record for the show, and the highest rating ever for a show debut on Spike TV. the third episode brought what the fans had been waiting for Kimbo Slice’s fight with Roy Nelson.

The episode outdid the previous record, pulling in a mammoth 5.3 million viewers, with a peak of 6.1 million. After his defeat ratings have dropped closer to 3 million viewers still good numbers when compared to previous season.

2. Roy Nelson Is This Seasons Douchebag

A key ingredient of each season of TUF is for one fighter to man up and take on the time honored role of season douchebag. Whilst no Junie Browning, Roy Big Country Nelson has wasted no time in letting the other cast members know that he is well qualified to take on the role.

After only two episodes he had already infuriated his trainers who branded him uncoachable due to his poor attitude. Dana White also appears far from impressed. After a less than stellar win over Kimbo Slice, Nelson strutted around the cage like he d just defeated a world champion, and confidently declared that he was glad to put on a show for Dana and Lorenzo.

Meanwhile Dana had a different opinion. He thought the fight sucked.

3. Marcus Jones Is An Unusual Human Being

At 6ft 6 and 265lbs, former NFL star Marcus Jones has an intimidating physique, perfect for a mixed martial artist. In training he appears to be throwing his sparring partners around like ragdolls.

Despite this, when he’s not beating the life out of his opponents, Big Baby reveals he likes nothing better than to indulge in his passion for gardening.

That’s not the only revelation he has up his sleeve though. I used to be very passionate about Dungeons & Dragons, he admit before sheepishly confessing, I might be the most boringest [sic] brother at home .

4. Kimbo Slice’s Ground Game Rivals Cheik Kongo

Having been training and fighting professionally as a mixed martial artist for over two years you would have assumed that Kimbo Slice may have at least acquired the basics of the ground game.

If he has then it appears he’s been taking lessons from Cheik Kongo whose idea of ground defense is to deflect his opponents punches with his head.

Proving himself to be a quick learner however, Slice did manage to nulify the worst of Roy Nelson’s ground and pound by sticking his head into the flabby mass of Big Country’s ever-expanding belly.

5. Rampage Jackson Is Possibly The Worst TUF coach Of All Time

and that’s really saying something considering Ken Shamrock was once a coach on the show. There’s a number of examples to illustrate this point, but really, one will suffice

Do what you got to do Abe, do what you got to do was just one of the pearls of wisdom he shared to team member Abe Wagner in episode one.

In the middle of being beat to a bloody pulp at the time, Abe clearly hadn t the foggiest idea what he was supposed to be doing.

Not to worry, Rampage was on hand with more helpful advice born from his years of professional fighting experience. you got to do something Abe, you got to do something

6. Some Of The Heavyweights Have Yet To Discover Cardio

Despite featuring a number of pro fighters and former NFL football players, most of this seasons heavyweights appear to have the cardio of a 60 year old couch potato. Nowhere was this more apparent than in the James McSweeney Vs Wes Shivers fight.

Shivers appeared to gas somewhere between walking into the cage and touching gloves with McSweeney at the beginning of the first round. Not to be outdone McSweeney threw a couple of kicks before quickly following suit.

By the end of the bout both had essentially dispensed with the notion of fighting and were busy clutching their knees and gasping for breath, occasionally responding to the exasperated pleas of their coaches to fight by shuffling around the cage after each other like a couple of asthmatic geriatrics.

7. Rashad Evans Seems Like A Good Coach

Whilst Rampage Jackson bungles his way through the coaching aspect of the show like a mixed martial arts equivalent of Inspector Clouseau, Rashad Evans couldn t fail to look like a tactical genius in comparison.

Some of the skills Evan’s appears to have over Jackson in this area include A. Picking his team based on their skills rather than how tall or famous they are. B. Having a strategy and C. Giving his fighters USEFUL advice during their fights.

In all seriousness he does appear to be one of the better coaches we ve seen on TUF to date, and his methods are working so far as his team is now up 5-0.

8. Kimbo Slice Is A Likable Grafter

There are easier and quicker ways for Kimbo Slice to make money than appearing on The Ultimate Fighter.

He does however appear to be willing to start at the bottom and work his way up. Aware of his weaknesses, Slice remains humble. I m a rookie at this he acknowledged after his defeat, I m a street fighter trying to become an ultimate fighter.

His attitude and willingness to learn may help to silence some of his critics.

9. Rampage And Rashad Really Don t Like Each Other

Whilst Rampage is clearly the funnier of the two, when it comes to a bit of the old verbal jousting, Rashad has proved more than a match for him so far.

In the last episode after Team Rampage slumped to a fifth consecutive defeat, Rashad critized his hands off approach to coaching and, as things escalated, informed him that I can fight you with your style and still beat your ass. On the losing end of the exchange, it wasn t long before Rampage beat a hasty retreat saying, Conversation over, Imma get to my troops. Rashad shouted after him, what you gonna do, just go in there and text? It’s not like your gonna teach them nothing sorry ass!

It’s only a matter of time before Rampage punches him in the face, or, if things get really bad, digs out the Yo Momma jokes.

10. The Best Is Still To Come

or so Dana White would have us believe. We do have faith though, mainly because it’s hard to imagine things getting much worse than the first three episodes. It’s somewhat ironic that the show had it’s biggest viewing figures ever for some of the worst fights ever seen in 10 series of the show.

The fourth and particularly the fifth episodes were definitely an improvement. There’s still a lot of ground to make up though if this is to meet Dana’s estimation that by episode 8 your going to be going wild.
