The Ultimate Fighting Championship is one of the fastest growing sports in terms of popularity, and the longer it continues the more guys want to join up and the more gamblers want to watch fights and place their bets.
Reality TV shows that set champion UFC fighters up against one another with a bunch of rookie wannabe fighters have clearly done nothing to damage the growing interest in the sport, and although the gambling population is slowly becoming aware of the UFC as an option, it can be difficult to ascertain just how a bet is placed on these fights because bookmakers don’t tend to run the normal win/lose odds on them.
UFC fights are usually drawn up by the bookmakers with moneylines instead of your average 18/1 odds. This is done because in so many UFC fights there is a clear favourite and a clear amateur, hoping for a win but unlikely to succeed.
If the odds were laid out according to expectations of the fight, a huge percentage of bettors would simply bet on the favourite and all of them would be winners. Not only is this completely un-thrilling, but it means that as bets on the favourite pour in before the fight, the odds are greater and greater in his favour until there is almost nothing to gain off the win for anyone except big spenders. And us average gamblers don’t usually want to bet our life savings, even on a sure thing. To combat this trend, the moneyline is brought in for betting on UFC fights.
A moneyline is really just another way to place the odds without hugely favouring one fighter over another. Instead of 3/1 odds or some such number, one fighter will be listed with a negative number and the other with a positive number. Let’s say two fighters were posted with a moneyline of -140 and +110; if you bet on the favourite with the negative number, you will have to spend 140 pounds to win 100 pounds. Conversely, if you bet on the underdog at +110, then your 100 pounds bet could win you 110 pounds.
The moneylines will fluctuate in the hours and days preceding the fight because the bookmaker doesn’t want the bettors to start favouring either fighter; however the bet you take out is fixed and you deal with the specific moneyline that was posted when you gave the bookmaker your money.
Because the UFC is a growing industry both within the sports world and the betting world, it can be tough to find bookmakers with any odds posted for them at all, moneyline or otherwise. If you want to bet online, however, the internet is the place to find your fight and cash in on your favourites.

Machida’s skill and mastery out-class Shogun’s aggressive muay thai. Machida over Shogun. At -405 I won’t be betting on this one.

- Rothwell is my dog pick for this event. Valesquez is a rising star, but Rothwell’s experience may actually be the difference here. Underdog pick is Rothwell at +235.

- I like Stevenson’s chances against Fisher. Although Fisher could win this standing up, Stevenson will likely get Fisher to the ground and control the fight. I expect this one to go to a UD for Stevenson. I’m with the UFC betting odds makers here. Stevenson at -245 is a fair bet.

- Remember Yoshida eating Koschek’s fists then being carried out of the cage on a stretcher? Johnson surely does. Many think this fight will be a replay as Johnson is being seen as a stronger, more physical fighter capable of KO’ing Yoshida. If it goes to the ground, Yoshida is favored. The problem is that Johnson is strong enough put off the takedown. I’m going with odds on this one. Johnson is -315. A small dog on Yoshida at +255 was being considered though.

- Okami’s favored at -225 to Sonnen’s +185 line. I believe this is Okami’s third straight under card bout. He was once very close to getting a title shot with Silva until he broke his hand. Cote got the nod instead. Okami’s winning again, but maybe not in a way that puts him in the “entertainment” column. Okami’s got to dominate and destroy in order to get to the main card. Sonnen’s a great match-up. Ultimately, this could end up in a decision.

- The Barry/Hardonk match-up could end with one of the fighters getting his walking papers. Reach and experience do go to Hardonk. Barry’s 1-1 UFC, while Hardonk’s 4-3 UFC. Lines are -110 for Barry, -120 for Hardonk. Barry’s still fighting at heavyweight at 5′11″. Personally, I’m staying away from this one. Barry should have too. (Sidenote: this could be a stand-up, leg-kick brawl – TKO on the way.)

- Darth Bader returns from a MCL and PCL knee injury from this April. The TUF 8 LHW winner, Ryan Bader, is heavily favored over Eric Schafer. At -435 for Bader and +355 for Schafer, you can see what the sportsbooks think of Schafer’s chances. I agree.

After keeping a low profile on the lead up to the fight, UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva broke his usual peace nad told reporters that he had already won against a fighter with style like Chael Sonnen, only better in Pride champ Dan Henderson.

Going to UFC 117, middleweight contender Chael Sonnen threw verbal slurs and ranted disrespect over the middleweight champion and his 11 consecutive wins, 6 of them title defenses. On these Silva has kept himself focused on what’s coming out of the octagon fight, and never really on the word war being imposed by Sonnen.

But in the prefight interview with Silva, he said, answering to Sonnen’s critic of not being able to fight a true wrestler, “Chael’s saying I’ve never fought a wrestler,” Silva says. “In my opinion, Dan Henderson is one of the best wrestlers in MMA.” Dan Henderson is a Greco-Roman wrestling Olympian and NCAA I division wrestler.

Silva speaking in his usual respectful manner, “in my opinion, Dan Henderson is one of the best wrestlers in MMA.” Silva won via rear naked choke.

That’s probably all he needs to say, but with words much fewer than Sonnen’s rants, it tells a lot of Silva’s advantage on this fight. Chael fights with 3 consecutive wins on his back. He was also the WEC middleweight champ before it got dissolved and sent Sonnen packing towards UFC, where Demian Maia, a guy Silva toyed, was waiting to give him a triangle choke.

There are impressive wins in Sonnen’s resume, but with the pound for pound best fighter in the world, he might not just fair as well as many UFC fighters Silva fought, especially Dan Henderson.

Even in word war, Silva showed he can beat Chael’s raps. And as far as UFC betting is concerned, Silva knows no one wins via a microphone.

The fight stays on the ring.

UFC 117 is on its way and fans are still in favor of middleweight champion Anderson Silva, although many of them silently hopes he gets dethroned by number 1 contender Chael Sonnen to pull Silva’s strings down to earth again.

After his lackluster performance and mockery of Demian Maia in UFC 112, Silva was bombarded with loud criticisms for lacking the will to engage and the killer instincts in the octagon. Nonetheless UFC gaming is still on a roll, with bets pouring in on the way to the fight.

Among the many elite cage fighters in UFC, Sonnen has shown the forciveness that will put pressure on Silva in the whole fight. Sonnen may not have real respect for Silva, but he will still have to back his words and put Silva to sleep or else he gets the toughest humiliation from every big names in Silva’s camp and their fans. Silva is ready, he is the champ, and like he said, Sonnen should come ready too.

Without mentioning the UFC middleweight title fight between Anderson Silva and Chael Sonnen, MMA fans will still take it to the stands and chant their way across Oracle Arena in Oakland, California, for all MMA and UFC betting fans who are heavily disappointed by Silva’s previous fights.

With a fight schedule probably mixed to avoid another embarrassment, UFC president Dana White arranged match ups that will underline the Silva-Sonnen main card. Among the awaited match up is the Jon Fitch and Thiago Alves rematch, which can be the fight of the night. Jon Fitch (22-3) won against Alves (16-6) in their first fight, where Fitch dominated with his wrestling.
