From Las Vegas, Nevada. Original airdate: 5/23/09

Big Lightweight vs Small Lightweight: Frank Edgar d. Sean Sherk w/ short arms via unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27, 30-27).

Why does Sherk think he is a boxer? He is built like a wrestler, his body is basically the antithesis of a boxer’s. The guy is not gonna knock anyone out, period. Has he watched too many Rocky movies or something?! Anyways, Sherk should not be on another main card until he changes things up. I feel like the UFC put pressure on Sherk’s camp to make him strike more, but it just doesn’t work and his fights are still boring. Anyhoo, this was an easy win for Franky, but unless he’s fighting KenFlo or a recovered Din Thomas, I’m really not interested anymore.

Not Pointless Middleweight Bout: Chael Sonnen d. Dan Miller via unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27, 30-27).

This one was a bit of a snoozer and I actually like Chael Sonnen as any fighter who can put up with BodogFIGHT and the IFL and still get some time in the UFC deserves my props and I also think Dan Miller has a great future in the sport; he’s generally well-rounded and has exceptional submission skills that seem to be natural for him.

Pointless Middleweight Bout: Drew McFedries d.  “Professor X” Xavier Foupa-Pokam via TKO (strikes) at 0:37 of round 1.

First knockout of the night and it was worth it as it was one hell of a knockout and X folded like a cheap chair; X should’ve kept his hands up, especially when he was back against the cage.

Sidenote: Is Tyson rich again? How can he afford the seats? His movie paycheck looked like it was spent on his “date”.

Welterweight GRUDGE Match: Matt Hughes w/ annoying entrance music d.  Matt Serra w/ Rocky theme via unanimous decision (29-28, 29-28, 29-28).

Well that was anticlimactic. I was expecting more after all that trash talking. This match should have happened a year ago and had a boring finish to boot as they gave the win to the guy who wanted the decision rather than to finish it. Serra had intent to end the fight, Hughes just wanted some points. Disappointing decision. Plus the third round should have at least been a split; Serra had a takedown in the 3rd as well and while Hughes did some damage on the ground, Serra did plenty to counter that.

Light Heavyweight Championship bout: “Put him in a bodybag Johnny yeah!” Lyoto Machida w/ Linkin Park music d. Rashad Evans via KO (punch) at 3:57 of round 2 to become the new UFC Light Heavyweight Champion.

HOLY CRAP MACHIDA STOPPED A FIGHT. Machida fight good. Me love him long time. This went from “OMG BORINGEST FIGHT EVAR” to “HE BEAT THE CRAP OUT OF HIM” pretty quick. Evans didn’t even throw a single punch as Mach’s punches are so accurate that every single one of those punches in the ko hit Evans flush on the chin. Also Evans looked like his body suddenly didn’t agree with gravity or something right in the middle of the knockout as his leg looked like it was about to snap off as he was going down. Machida doesn’t look quick until he strikes, then all of a sudden out of nowhere it’s like where the hell did that come from? I guess Karate is officially back. Anyways, Evans did the best anyone could have done. The UFC is indeed screwed now, as no one will beat this guy. That entire match was a damn promotional video for karate. A new era has dawned in MMA history my friends; screw Muai Thai and BJJ, I’m signing up for Shotokan Karate tomorrow. This Ryu guy is going to bring in so many new fans/bandwagoners.

At times, the long-awaited UFC 114 grudge match between former light heavyweight champions “Suga” Rashad Evans and Quinton “Rampage” Jackson looked like the calm after the storm of trash talk and bad blood. But an action-packed third round and a solidly executed gameplan from Evans will remain in the minds of fight fans for a while as he pounded out a three round unanimous decision win over his rival Saturday night at the MGM Grand Garden Arena.

Scores were 30-27 twice and 29-28 for Evans, who called the victory “a huge relief.”

“He’s tough,” said Jackson, who was coming off a layoff of over a year since his last bout at UFC 96 in March of 2009. “He’s faster than I anticipated. He was the man today.”

Jackson, whose rivalry with Evans began after that UFC 96 fight and escalated when the two were coaches on the tenth season of The Ultimate Fighter reality show, raced across the Octagon at the bell to get in Evans’ face, but it was Evans who got the first shot in, a lightning fast right hand that rocked Jackson and sent him sprawling into the cage. Evans locked his foe up there, but Jackson was able to remain upright and avoid the takedown, even scoring briefly with a knee before referee Herb Dean broke the stalemate with 2:50 left. With 2:15 remaining, Evans shot off a quick combination and followed up with a takedown. After taking some ground strikes, Jackson made it back to his feet but Evans wouldn’t release his grip on his opponent against the fence. Dean again broke the stalemate, this time with 28 seconds left, and it was Jackson ending the round strong by stuffing a takedown and scoring with a quick flurry before the bell. UFC Handicapping this fight there is no question who is the better fighter. Quinton Jackson only had his powerful strikes. Rashad Evans knows he cannot strike with Jackson and will need to rely on speed and quick jabs to set up the takedowns.

Rampage lacks is kick defense and does little to check kicks or work on his kicking game. It is unlikely that Rampage has been working on improving his his inability to check kicks which cost him the fight against Forrest Griffin and almost his fight against Jardine.

Evans hails from one of the best mixed martial arts camps in the world in Jackson’s Fighting Submission. Jackson on the other hand does not have anyone overlooking the “small” details in his training. He currently works out of the Wolfslair MMA Academy with Michael Bisping, Cheick Kongo and Paul Kelly. Most fighters at this club are average fighters at best.

There is no one to push Jackson at this club as their jujitsu and a wrestling coach is non-existent. Unlike Evans there will be no game plan to help Jackson come up with a game plan.

If you look at Rampage’s record he tends to have trouble with multi skilled fighters. Jackson has always relied upon his power striking to win matches and when this fails he has no other answer.

Evans is too smart a fighter to fall into a striking battle with Rampage. For Jackson, the desire to fight competitively is gone as he is more focused on his movie career.

Jackson is lacking in proper training, wrestling and grappling skills as well as a real desire to continue competing at this level.

Though I think Evans will win this fight I do not like the sports betting odds for this fight. Silva opened up at +160. I think the lines should a lot closer and the -195 UFC betting line for Evans is a little off base. I personally don’t like the opening sports betting odds for this fight. Yes I do think that Rashad is going to win this fight but the -195 opening betting lines seem a little steep. The reason why the lines are so steep is because Rashad was on the Ultimate Fighter reality show and he has more exposure than Silva. Betting for mixed martial arts has never been about trends or ability but more about marketing. Because Evans has more exposure he gets favourable betting lines.
We dont even know if Thiago Silva is even a top ten fighter yet. This will be his biggest test to set if he is an upper echelon fighter.  Once a member of the renowned Chute Boxe Academy, Thiago now trains with established fighting stable American Top Team. However, one thing is for sure and that is he can fight. The one thing that still needs to be answered about Silva is if he can fight top level fighters. He has only fought only one really top level fighter in Lyoto Machida where he was KO`èd in the first round. He has an impressive KO over Keith Jardine which has given him some more credibility but the real test is Rashad Evans.

Bet this fight at Bookmaker
Striking wise Silva is a better striker. He has been kicks and punches and he is very agressive in his forward attack and his strikes. He will pose some problems for Evans. The one disadvantage about Silva`s striking is that he is not patient. He likes to come forward too much and this puts him in vulnerable situations. Even though Rashad does not have as much skill in the striking department he is a smarter fighter and striker. He likes to be patient and wait and time his strikes. Rashad is not a very aggressive striker and he will wait until it is the perfect time to strike while Silva is more aggressive and puts him in vulnerable positions. Rashad uses a lot of head movements and tries to fake his opponent to throw strikes. Once his makes his opponent throw a punch or kick he will counter attack. Just look at his fight with Chuck Liddell. He was patient and waited for Liddell to come in an throw a punch and then he counter attacked and was able to knock out Liddell. Well Silva is an even more aggressive striker than Liddell is and will press the action. This will leave him in a vulnerable position to be hurt by Evans. Bottom Line: Both fighters come from great MMA camps but Evans trains with Greg Jackson and he is the best trainer in mixed martial arts today. He will come up with a game plan to fight Silva. He will adjust his fight plan for Silva. Thiago already beat a Greg Jackson fighter in Keith Jardine. Silva knocked out Jardine with a left hook and ground and pound stopping the fight at 1:35 minutes  of the first round at UFC 102. You might be able to beat Greg Jackson once but not twice. Evans is a very smart fighter and will listen to whatever game plan Jackson comes up with.

If you are a follower of UFC then you know UFC 114 is coming up on May, 29 2010.  This bout will feature Quinton Rampage Jackson vs Rashad Evans and should be a very entertaining night of Full Force MMA.Jackson was originally supposed to fight Evans for the title after defeating Keith Jardine, but a jaw injury during that fight allowed Lyoto Machida to step in in and take his place. At UFC 98 Evans was knocked out by Machida. Jackson was then expected to fight for the title against Machida, but instead became a coach on The Ultimate Fighter: Heavyweights against Evans.Quinton Jackson, also known as Rampage Jackson, is an American MMA fighter and actor. Jackson rose to prominence in Japan’s Pride Fighting Championships where he was noted for his powerful body slams including a famous knockout victory over Ricardo Arona. In the United States, he became known for his tenure in the Ultimate Fighting Championship. He is a former UFC Light-Heavyweight title holder and one of the most entertaining fighters to watch.  Jackson appeared for a second time as a coach on the reality series The Ultimate Fighter opposite Rashad Evans. They were scheduled to fight at UFC 107, but this bout was cancelled when Jackson took a movie role to play B. A. Baracus in The A-Team feature film.Rashad Evans is an American MMA fighter from Lansing, Michigan, currently signed to the Ultimate Fighting Championship where he is a former UFC Light Heavyweight Champion. Evans won the heavyweight division of The Ultimate Fighter 2. He holds notable victories over Chuck Liddell, Thiago Silva and Forrest Griffin. Evans trains out of Albuquerque, New Mexico with Jackson’s Submission Fighting. Evans lost the UFC Light Heavyweight Championship by way of knockout to undefeated Lyoto Machida at UFC 98.Both fighters are very similar in stature and the rivalary between the two is well documented.  Fans on both side of the card have valid arguments over who will come out the victor in this battle.  My money is on Rashad Evans.  He has wanted this fight for some time and will now get his chance to prove that Rampage is all talk (as he so eloquently put it). Many people from around the world will be watching this fight, including me!  We have searched everywhere to find UFC 114 Live online and have finally found a provider who will offer the fight via live stream on May 29, 2010.  If you are wanting to watch just go to http://ufc114.info and sign up today.  The PPV live stream will begin several hours before the featured fight and you will be able to watch all of the other cards scheduled that night.
