Is the UFC going to be the NFL of MMA and the rest of the promotion companies arena football? Do you think it is best to have one true championship promotional company? Do you think the UFC has a fair ranking system?

Ever wonder how many people were compelled to become involved in martial arts after seeing Bruce Lee perform on the screen? Too many to count, right? That said, if you are counting, add Dan Miller, a recent inductee to the Universal Martial Arts Association’s Hall of Fame, to the list.

And like Bruce Lee, Dan Miller wants to make a splash on the big screen. "That was my first goal as a child after seeing Bruce Lee movies," Miller told The State Journal. "I never gave up on it. It always stayed with me. I tried to leave but I came back to it. It’s like it called me."

At 36, you have to give him credit for following his dream no matter where it takes him. Congratulations on a great honor.

Recently, when the UFC wants to bring in a fighter with some fan appeal – Mirko Cro Cop, anyone? – Mostapha Al Turk tends to be the guy standing in the way. Well, according to Rolles Gracie and his management team the newest Gracie to grace the Octagon will be fighting at UFC 109 against… guess who? That’s right, Al Turk.

Rolles is the son of Rolls, whose uncle was Helio Gracie. He holds a second degree black belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and a 3-0 mixed martial arts record, with all of his wins coming by way of submission. The bottom line is that anytime a Gracie enters the UFC Octagon, particularly one that people are as high on as Rolles, it’s a pretty exciting time. It will be interesting to see what he can do with the organization.

Nate Diaz and Gray Maynard are set to fight in the main event at Ultimate Fight Night 20 on January 11th graciefighter.com has announced. It will not be the first time the two lightweights will have fought each other however, as they previously squared off in the cage in the semi-finals of The Ultimate Fighter Season 5. On that occasion Diaz came out on top, locking on a guillotine choke in the second round. Diaz would then go on to win the show outright.

Since then both fighters have made a significant impression on the UFC s lightweight division. Gray Maynard (8-0-1NC) is currently on a six fight unbeaten run, defeating Frankie Edgar, Jim Miller and Roger Huerta along the way, and has been suggested as a possible title contender if his current form continues.

Meanwhile Nate Diaz (11-4) started off strongly in the UFC after beating Manny Gamburian in the TUF finale, registering a further four wins before losing two decisions in a row to Clay Guida and Joe Stevenson. He bounced back in his last fight however, claiming a second round submission victory over Melvin Guillard.

For Maynard the fight sees both the opportunity for revenge, and the chance to claim another significant win that will boost his title hopes. For Diaz a win over Maynard at this stage would be more notable than his previous win over the wrestler considering his current run of form, and would signify that he is again ready to push for a top contender spot himself.

Chuck Liddell is proving himself to be a man of many talents. Now that he has put his dancing career to rest, looks like he is taking another look at competing in the Octagon. Since his recent unexpected defeat by Rampage Jackson, Chuck has needed to step back and contemplate his place in the UFC going forward. Props: Sherdog.com

I still love fighting. I don t know what we re going to come up with. I m going to start spending a lot of time training guys or get back in there – one of the two. I needed some time off. Dancing actually gave me something to concentrate on and get in shape on. I just want to get back in shape and stay in shape and start training with people and see what I want to do. [And] why would anyone even want to see me fight Kimbo? I have no interest in that fight. Whatever. It is what it is. I guess I d do it, if that s who I had to fight to come back.

Former light heavyweight champion Chuck Liddell mulls a potential return to the cage that made him famous after getting booted from Dancing with the Stars on ABC. The Iceman is coming off a technical knockout loss to Mauricio Shogun Rua at UFC 97 back in April, marking his fourth loss in his last five fights.

Company president Dana White has pressed his good friend and big time money-making machine to hang up the gloves, saying he has made a ton of cash and has nothing left to prove. Liddell who will be 40 years old by the time April 2010 rolls around clearly needs more time make up his mind but would apparently do whatever it takes to get back inside the cage. Even if that means fulfilling a rumor gone wild about hooking them up with the grappling deprived Kevin Kimbo Slice Ferguson. Syndicated by MMAmania

Rampage Jackson has had it with the UFC… Being taken for granted and feeling disrespected, Rampage has declared that his fighting days with the UFC are over. Time will tell, of course. A great talent. Hopefully, they can convince him to reconsider his decision.

Rampage says "Im done fighting"! I’m done fighting… The UFC has done a lot for me but I think I have done more for them. The UFC bought WFA to get my contract and they saved my life, so I felt loyal to them.

They pushed me into a fight with Chuck Liddel even when I clearly stated I wasn’t ready to fight for the belt because the American fans didn’t know me but I took the fight and didn’t complain and after I won the American fans booed me for the first time which changed the way I saw them & it hurt me deeply.

Then before I can even get out of the cage they announced that I was fighting Dan Henderson without even asking me. After I beat Dan Henderson, I made history in becoming the first undisputed champion in MMA but was never even given the pride belt in the cage and I was never promoted as the undisputed champ. Later Anderson Silva was. Submitted by scrapp-happy

UFC fighting has become a popular combat and contact sport worldwide. Fighters employ various fighting styles including kicks, punches and wrestling moves. The beginnings of the sport can be traced back to the Grecian Olympic Games circa 600 BC, where the mixed fighting style known as pankration was a popular event.

The modern version of these Mixed Martial Arts competitions dates back to the 1920s. It was then that the Brazilian Gracie family started what they called "vale tudo" (literally, "anything goes") martial arts tournaments. By the late 1960s, mixed martial arts matches were being hosted in Japan by Antonio Inoki, and later, Bruce Lee’s "hybrid fighting" injected a new dynamic into the fighting sports.

MMA gained a foothold in the United States in 1993, when Brazilian ju-jitsu fighter Royce Gracie dominated the Ultimate Fighting Championship and touched off a revolution in the martial arts world. Television coverage began sporadically and then began to pick up momentum in the mid-1990s with regular cable coverage and tie-ins to live events.

Continued interest in the new, growing sport resulted in the establishment of the PRIDE Fighting Championships in Japan in the late 1990s. At this point, and into the early 2000s, MMA tournaments began implementing extra rules for fighters’ safety, as well as to engender acceptance of the sport. Since instituting these changes, MMA has quickly grown to the point of setting cable-TV pay-per-view records for its matches.

Proponents of the sport want to keep as much of the initial no-holds-barred style as possible, while at the same time making the sport popular and protecting the health and safety of competitors. The sport is internationally popular, still growing and building a global fan base that can support professional league, as well as lobby for inclusion in the modern Olympics.

That is the next big fight coming up for MMA, so if you’re a martial arts fan (or athlete), stay tuned for the news about new medal sports at the 2012 olympic games in London. A serious campaign was waged to get the sport into the 2008 Beijing games, but was ultimately unsuccessful. Interestingly, this has not stopped the sport’s growth, but merely turned the predictions on their heads.

Instead of the sport joining the Olympic line-up, Olympic stars are joining MMA. Olympic athlete Satoshi Ishii is giving up judo to take up a career in mixed martial arts following his gold medal win in the men’s over-100-kilogram event at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. He is the third Japanese judo medalist to make the move since 2000.

Other single-discipline martial arts masters are making the move to the multidisciplinary MMA style. Several national and international organizations promote matches and crown champions, and the coming years should see further consolidation of the different groups, perhaps into a single governing body.

Growth, media coverage, pay-per-view, publicity, promotions and controversy – these are all signposts along the route that most "newer" sports take to widespread acceptance and eventual popularity, and it all seems to be happening now for MMA. With the number of stars and fans increasing steadily, MMA certainly does seem ready to become the breakthrough sport of the new millennium.
